This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when the couple move from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that come with most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
