Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using these treatments need to be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
