European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
